Best UK Project Under 100MW at the 2025 Energy Storage Awards

Delighted to share that our Annandale Distillery electro-thermal energy storage project has been recognised as “Best UK Project Under 100MW” at the 2025 Energy Storage Awards.

Industry wants to decarbonise, but it needs solutions that deliver energy in the form it needs, and that are both competitive with and complementary to conventional fossil fuels. Balancing supply and demand in our energy systems is increasingly complex, so solutions that maximise utilisation of the energy we generate will be key. We’d rather turn up demand than turn down renewable generation!

With funding from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the support of Annandale Distillery, Cochran, Flexitricity and Amber Programmable Design Ltd, we’ve delivered a first-of-a-kind deployment of high-temperature electro-thermal storage (up to 1200 °C): taking low-cost, otherwise wasted, renewable electricity, storing it as heat, and turning it into reliable, on-demand steam.

Annandale Distillery is a live example that industrial process heat can reduce or eliminate gas use while helping to balance the system, mitigating curtailment and creating low-carbon heat for UK industry. Policy and levy design that properly values green electricity for heat through flexible use will unlock many more sites like this, at lower cost than staying with gas alone.

We are working with the team at Flexitricity to participate in National Energy System Operator’s Local Constraint Market (LCM) – a trial local flexibility market in Scotland designed to improve constraint management by making better use of local flexible assets and reducing curtailment. It highlights strong potential to scale across the country.
